A revista Nature Biotechnology de Junho apresenta um interessante artigo (suponho ser necessário assinatura da revista, mas no entanto posso enviar via email o artigo em pdf a quem desejar...) sobre a evolução do mercado da biotecnologia.
Aconselho a leitura deste artigo a todos. Serve para ver a discrepância entre o investimento privado na investigação entre a Europa e os EUA.
Para elucidar melhor, segue uma pequena parte do artigo:
“The global picture
The United States continues its dominance of the public biotech market, with nearly 70% of companies surveyed calling the US home. Canada and the United Kingdom each hold just under a tenth of the total companies, with 37 companies each, and only a handful of surveyed companies hail from outside North America or Europe: 4 from Israel, 7 from Australia and 1 from Hong Kong.
Although public US companies outnumber their European counterparts by almost 4 to 1, private biotech companies are slightly more numerous in Europe4. This small showing in the public marketplace in Europe can be attributed to the fact that nearly half of the companies are under three years old, and their management teams less experienced than their US counterparts. In addition, Europeans lack a single, well-capitalized technology market5, with the consequence that there is no real after-market—companies can float IPOs, but have trouble finding follow-on funding. This may improve if the region turns to the Swiss Exchange.”
